Ithaca, NY 14850
273.8284 x 3-2
http://www.TheHistoryCenter.net
We invite you and your family to visit the Eight Square Schoolhouse on Saturday, August 15th from 1-3pm for our drop-by open house to enjoy refreshments, 19th century games for kids, and to visit with staff members who will be on hand to talk about the fascinating 182-year story of The History Center's largest artifact!
To get there: Take rt. 13 to Hanshaw Road. Turn right onto Hanshaw Rd. The schoolhouse is located just around the corner from Route 13, just past Cayuga Radio Group, across the street from High Speed Checkweighers.
About the Schoolhouse
The Schoolhouse has been an integral part of Tompkins County history since it was built in 1827, when it ran over budget and incurred a total construction cost of $550. Henry Balcom, a local master carpenter from McLean, built the 8 Square with bricks from a factory several miles up the road from the school. Parents of children attending the school were asked to supply wood to help heat the building during the winter, as well as pay school taxes.
Several of the Schoolhouse’s more famous alumni include Ezra Cornell’s wife Mary Ann Wood, and his son, Alonzo Cornell, who became New York State’s 25th governor in 1880. The schoolhouse was officially closed in 1941, when school districts became centralized and children were bussed to school. Today it is the site of The History Center’s renowned 1892 Living History Schoolhouse program for children in Tompkins County.
