Travel nine miles southwest from Ithaca to the town of Newfield. Home to New York State’s oldest covered bridge, there are a number of outdoor adventures waiting to be discovered in Newfield, NY.

Newfield Landmark

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the town is the Newfield Covered Bridge. It is the oldest covered bridge in New York and dates back to 1851. It was originally built with a cover to reduce the need for repairs on the road every decade or so. Descendants of those who helped to build the bridge can still be found living in Newfield. For fans of historical landmarks this is a must-add to the list of things to do in and around Ithaca.

Newfield Outdoor Recreation

Venture into the woods of Newfield. Hike the trails of NY’s largest Wildlife Management Area, go bird watching, cast out a line and go fishing. Whatever strikes your fancy, Newfield is a great place to enjoy the great outdoors.

Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area is a perfect spot to visit all year round for outdoor enthusiasts. Enjoy primitive camping in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter. The area spans 11,045 acres and includes a portion of the Finger Lakes Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail. Nearby, you can find the Arnot Forest, owned by Cornell University. The university uses it for fieldwork, research, and extension activities, but the trails are open for public use as well. The trails are also prime for cross-country skiing.
