Handwork, Ithaca’s Artisan Cooperative (formerly Cooperative Craft Store) was started in 1976 by 12 local craftspeople. Working together they could afford the cost and time of opening a retail shop to sell their work.
A true cooperative, Handwork is owned and staffed by it's members. Handwork also carries a selection of work from other craftspeople from across the country and continues to strengthen the focus on crafts that are made in New York and surrounding states. Handwork members meet monthly to share information, decision making and jury new member-applicants.
Handwork now has 45 member artisans doing a range of work that includes pottery, woodworking, glass, jewelry, fiber arts, wearable arts, leather, dried florals, paper, fine art and photography.
