Cinemapolis is a longtime Ithaca staple and one of the last true independent theaters in the region. Over the past decade, it’s grown into a cornerstone of the national indie film scene, known for its thoughtful programming and commitment to community.
Cinema History in Ithaca
Built in 1986, during the boom of suburban multiplexes and mall-based theaters, Cinemapolis has remained firmly rooted in downtown Ithaca. With strong community support, it continues to push back against the shift away from neighborhood-based cinema, preserving the shared, local experience of moviegoing!
As well as holding a permanent spot in Ithaca’s heart, Cinemapolis is also a great place to watch some excellent films. Its five screens show independent, foreign, and locally produced movies. It’s a place to relive the past, with many cult classics on show all year round. Prominent speakers are a regular fixture here, offering fascinating insights into film—think directors, writers, and actors! Cinemapolis also functions as a cultural center, hosting festivals like the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival each spring.
Catch a Show!
Their showtimes include everything from daily matinées and evening screenings. And their snack bar is first-rate (with all your favorite movie snacks plus plenty of healthy options)! After catching a show, the nearby Alley Cat Cafe is a great place to unwind and discuss film surrounded by resident cats! Or, try the local Ithaca Ale House for local craft beers and tasty bites.
Cinemapolis continues to anchor downtown Ithaca with independent films, curated programming, and a cozy concessions counter—making it a cultural staple well worth a visit!
