Some of Ithaca’s most memorable places are just off the radar. From hidden waterfalls to indie shops and quiet cafés, this town rewards curiosity. These lesser-known spots offer a fresh way to experience Ithaca’s natural beauty and creative spirit.
Sapsucker Woods
Sapsucker Woods is a 425-acre nature preserve and bird sanctuary as well as the headquarters for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It’s a great destination for bird watchers, with scenic trails, ponds, and swamps. Nature lovers can explore the diverse habitats, spot a wide variety of birds, and learn more about the natural world in this quaint and educational setting.
Gourdlandia
Part art studio and part working farm, Gourdlandia is a one-of-a-kind spot where you can take a gourd-crafting class, learn how to grow and dry gourds, or pick up a handmade piece to take home. The space is open year-round, but the gourd garden is at its peak in late summer and early fall.
Carl Sagan's Grave at Lake View Cemetery
Lake View Cemetery is a historic site in Ithaca, and also the burial place of renowned astronomer (and Cornell University professor) Carl Sagan. Visit his grave at the southeast end of the cemetery and look for the blue marbles people leave as a nod to his book, "Pale Blue Dot."
Sunset Park
Head to Sunset Park to see just what the name claims: a stunning view of the sun setting over Cayuga Lake. This hidden gem is tucked away in a hillside neighborhood and has a long stone wall where you can sit and take in a peaceful sunset.
East Hill Antiques
If you love searching for treasure, pop into East Hill Antiques, an unexpected collection of vintage jewelry and clothing, eclectic deco, and antique collectibles. Packed from floor to ceiling, you can spend hours here just searching for the most unexpected and happy finds!
Alley Cat Cafe
If you’re into coffee and cats, Alley Cat Cafe has both. Order a latte, tea, or vegetarian bite, then head into the Cat Room, where you can hang out with adoptable cats from Browncoat Cat Rescue—just be sure to reserve your spot in advance.
Lick Brook Falls at Sweedler Nature Preserve
Tucked away just a few miles from Downtown Ithaca, the Lick Brook Falls at the Sweedler Nature Preserve features three major waterfalls well worth checking out. Managed by the Finger Lakes Land Trust, the preserve remains wild and undeveloped, offering a peaceful escape into nature. The waterfalls are best seen after a rainstorm.
Ithaca Children's Garden
The Ithaca Children's Garden is a three-acre public garden that offers a magical experience for children of all ages! Don't miss the larger-than-life turtle sculpture named Gaia, the Hands-on-Nature Anarchy Zone, and the Bulb Labyrinth Memorial Garden. The Garden also features a “Troll House” and a “Story Walk.” Best of all, this whimsical destination is free to visit!
